Dr. René de la Rie 

L’incontro Bastioni con il Dr. de la Rie del 15 marzo 2019, svoltosi nel magnifico salone del Palazzo San Niccolò, ha visto un’ampia ed entusiasta partecipazione da parte di conservatori/restauratori provenienti dai più svariati ambiti lavorativi. Grazie al prezioso aiuto di Irene Biadaioli, l’incontro è stato tradotto dall’inglese all’italiano e viceversa.  La prima metà della presentazione si è concentrata sui processi d’invecchiamento delle vernici naturali, mentre la seconda metà ha esplorato le caratteristiche delle vernici a basso peso molecolare, commercialmente conosciute come Regalrez 1092, Regalrez 1126 e Laropal A81. Informazioni relative ad additivi, assorbitori UV e HALS, hanno concluso il bellissimo incontro dove vari punti di vista e casi studio sono stati discussi ed analizzati.  Lo scambio, assai proficuo, tra il punto di vista di uno scienziato come il Dr. de la Rie e i casi studio dei conservatori partecipanti all’incontro, ci ha ancora una volta dimostrato quanto sia valido il confronto fra professionisti provenienti da specializzazioni diverse con in comune l’interesse per la salvaguardia dei beni culturali.

In accordo con il Dr. de la Rie, l’Associazione Bastioni ha voluto mettere in piedi un piccolo esperimento post-presentazione, ovvero, la creazione di un gruppo WhatsApp amministrato dal Dr. de la Rie, dalla coordinatrice dell’incontro Valeria Cocchetti e dalla presidente dell’Associazione Bastioni Daniela Murphy Corella ACR. Lo scopo della chat, che ha avuto la durata di due settimane, è stato quello di permettere ai partecipanti all’incontro di approfondire le tematiche discusse con domande dirette al Dr. de la Rie. Le domande e le risposte sono state tradotte in tempo reale dall’italiano all’inglese e viceversa, permettendo a tutti i partecipanti di interagire con le informazioni raccolte. Il risultato è stato uno scambio di informazioni assai ricco e pieno di spunti che merita sicuramente ulteriori approfondimenti.  Vogliamo ringraziare di cuore il Dr. de la Rie per aver accettato di far parte del nostro esperimento e per aver risposto pazientemente e puntualmente a tutti i nostri quesiti. Dr. de la Rie’s lecture held on the 15^th March 2019 at the magnificent venue of Palazzo San Niccolò, saw a high attendance of enthusiastic participants with approximately 70 Florentine conservators/restorers from various institutes, academies, schools and private practices. The lecture was translated from English into Italian with the help of Irene Biadaioli, for which we are eternally grateful. The first half of the lecture dealt with the aging processes of natural varnishes, whilst the second half focused on the characteristics of low molecular varnishes commercially known as Regalrez 1092, Regalrez 1126 and Laropal A81. Information regarding additives, UV absorbers and HALS concluded a delightful evening where various points of view and case studies were discussed and analyzed.  The exchange between the scientific outlook of Dr Renè de la Rie and the output of the participating conservators, proved yet again how fruitful the exchange of information is, especially when it comes from two different professional stances – that of the scientist and that of the conservator- who ultimately aim for the same result, the preservation of our cultural heritage.

As part of the lecture, the Association Bastioni, in agreement with Dr. de la Rie, decided to attempt a small post-lecture experiment which has led to some very interesting results. All the participants of the lecture were invited to join a whatsup group administered by Dr. de la Rie, lecture coordinator Valeria Cocchetti and President of the Associazione Bastioni Daniela Murphy Corella ACR. The group was opened for the duration of two weeks allowing all the participants of the lecture to ask Dr. de la Rie questions related to the themes discussed during the lecture. All the questions and answers were translated to and from Italian and English. The result has been a very interesting exchange of information and a very useful tool to clarify doubts, misunderstandings and nuances, which often are lost in a time restricted presentation. We are all very grateful to Dr. de la Rie for his patience and precision in answering the questions posed to him and especially for having accepted to take part in our little post-lecture experiment. L’incontro con il Dr. René de la Rie si terrà il 15 marzo dalle ore 15:30 alle ore 18:30 nella sede dell’Associazione Bastioni, via San Niccolò 91r, 50125 Firenze. Il professor de la Rie ci parlerà dell'utilizzo delle vernici sintetiche nel campo della conservazione e del restauro dei beni culturali.
A seguire un breve riassunto dei temi che verranno trattati.
Tanti e diversi sono stati i materiali utilizzati per eseguire le operazioni di verniciatura e di ritocco.  La tradizione ha sempre voluto che le resine adoperate fossero naturali. Nel XX secolo sono stati introdotti i polimeri sintetici che, paragonati alle resine naturali, sono da considerarsi più stabili a livello chimico e fisico. Utilizzando resine sintetiche a basso peso molecolare per la verniciatura e il ritocco, è possibile ottenere un aspetto simile a quello ottenuto utilizzando resine naturali. Durante l’incontro verranno anche discussi fattori riguardanti la stabilità, l’aspetto e l’uso di additivi stabilizzanti in relazione alle resine sintetiche, nonché lo sviluppo di nuovi colori per le operazioni di ritocco. 
L'incontro sarà un approfondimento e non un’introduzione al tema delle vernici sintetiche, argomento che il professore de la Rie ha già ampiamente approfondito in vari convegni e incontri precedenti. L’incontro si terrà in inglese con traduzione simultanea in italiano e verrà correlato da presentazione PowerPoint. Si prevede inoltre una sezione finale Q&A (domande e risposte), il rilascio di un attestato di partecipazione e un aperitivo conclusivo.

Dr. René de la Rie’s lecture will take place on the 15^th of March 2019 from 3,30 to 6,30 pm at the Associazione Bastioni, via San Niccolò 91r, 50125 Florence. Professor de la Rie will talk about the use of synthetic and natural varnishes for the conservation and restoration of artworks in the field of cultural heritage. Below follows a brief summary of the lecture.

Many different materials have been used for varnishing and retouching. Traditionally, natural resins were used for this purpose. In the 20th century synthetic polymers were introduced. These are often chemically and physically more stable than their natural counterparts. The optical properties of varnishes are however largely controlled by their molecular weight. By using synthetic low molecular weight resins for varnishing and retouching, an appearance similar to that obtained using natural resins can be achieved. Factors affecting stability, including the use of stabilizing additives, and appearance will be discussed. The development of new paints for retouching will also be covered.

The lecture is not an introduction to these topics but rather an in-depth analysis. Participants who wish to review the basic principles of de la Rie’s studies and research topics may download the material published on the right-hand sidebar or visit the listed links.

The lecture will be held in English with a simultaneous translation into Italian and will include a PowerPoint presentation and a final Q&A session. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance. An aperitif will be offered at the end of the lecture.
